Q:

Low odor, non toxic kids room paint for painting kids rooms?

I’m looking to paint by twins bedroom. They are 6 years old and both have allergies. Do you know of a low odor non-toxic kid room paint that would be good for painting kids rooms?

- Kendra

In my opinion, Mythic Paint is the way to go. Here’s a great video that explains the Benefits of Mythic Paint. As for kids room paint colors,  you’ll also find a nice collection of bedroom paint colors by visiting The Land of Nod Mythic Paint Collection.

Q:

What color should I paint a kids room in a basement?

My twin boys are now preteens who want to relocate their bedroom in the basement. The room currently has a gray carpet with red, green and blue specks. There are no windows and the lighting is florescent. I don’t have the exact size of the room, but a full size bed is the largest size bed that will look right in it. Currently the walls are a light green color. I’m considering a painting the boys room a medium to dark blue.  What color would you suggest for the walls? Any shades of white are out of the question.

A:

When it comes to painting kids rooms that are in a basement go light. While you don’t have to go ‘white’ you should keep your paint color(s) light so your kids room doesn’t feel too dark and dreary.  A light blue would be better.

Q:

Help please! The paint and primer peeled off my kids walls!?

I am painting my son’s bedroom, which previously had a brightly colored mural on it. To be safe, I sanded down the uneven parts and put a primer on the wall made specifically for dark and bright colors. The paint scheme he wants is  red and black with stripes and checkers as part of the design.  Both the paint and primer are  semi gloss.  When I went to take the tape off for the striped wall not only did pieces of the red come off, but the primer came right up with it. What now have is a beautiful red wall with ugly flourescent green tears. It ripped just like paper. I can’t figure out what happened, I waited 2 days between applying the primer and the paint. The paint was also allowed to dry for 2 days.  Any idea why this happened? Is there any easy fix? I don’t want to have to start over from scratch.  Please help.

A:

Is there any chance the primer wasn’t completely dry? Sometimes it takes longer than a couple of days to be sufficiently dry. What about the primer – was it  ‘oil’ based? Have you asked the experts at your local paint store for their thoughts? Sorry, I couldn’t help you further.

Q:

Where to find glow paint and glow in the dark stars?

My 10 year old son loves astronomy and I am looking to create a cool kids room for him using glow paint and glow in the dark stars. Do you have any particular glow in the dark products you would recommend? I would like to paint the knobs of his dresser as well as some other things in the room like his bulletin board and poster frames, the base of his bedside lamp, and his light switch. Thanks in advance.

- Taylor

A:

There are a variety of good glow paints on the market depending on your particular needs. I’d read the details of the following products and decide for yourself which glow paint is best for your individual projects. As for glow in the dark stars, I would recommend the following. Another idea to add a fun dimension to your son’s bedroom is to incorporate some wall stripes using glow-in-the-dark tape. It can be a really effective look as long as you don’t overdo it with too many stripes. Please click on the photos for product details and pricing.
