Q:
Ideas for a “Hollywood” or “Broadway” kids themed room?
We are making over a shared bedroom for our two daughters 6 and 10. They are both into theater and dance. I need color and decorating ideas to make their bedroom space come together. So far, we’re stripping the floors down to wood, installing large mirrors and a barre and putting new lights and a mirror on a built-in dressing table. We have lots of ideas as far as having Hollywood/Broadway posters and props but coming up with a color scheme to pull it all together is driving us nuts! Any ideas?
- Mandy
A:
A rich color would be fabulous! Give some thought to jewel tones in blue or gold or deep amethyst. Another good idea to bring the look of your girls’ shared bedroom together would be to use (satin or velvet) drapery behind their beds. All you need to do is hang simple rods and some drapery tied back like stage curtains. Now the room has a WOW factor!
Q:
What color of carpet should I put in my toddler’s spongebob themed bedroom?
I am not sure what color of kids rug I should get for my toddler’s bedroom with a spongebob theme. The room already has hardwood floors but I thought a colorful kids area rug would cozy up the space. Any thoughts?
- Thomas
A:
Considering the SpongeBob SquarePants colors (prominently bright yellow and blue) you are probably using in your kids room decor, I would suggest blue over yellow for an kids area rug color. A yellow rug could be overpowering and wouldn’t be as versatile when you want to update the theme of your toddler’s room. I’d also suggest a darker shade of blue than the color of blue used in most of the SpongeBob bedding coordinates.
Can you really have too many colors in a kids room?
I love the colors in a peacock feather but my parents say I should restrict my color selection to one or two shades only. What do you think?
- David
A:
Well, I believe I understand your parent’s concern about too many colors – too much color can be overpowering. That said, turquoise is a prominent color in peacock feathers and could be used as a main color complemented by one or two other colors. Turquoise is a fresh color that would work well with a rich blue and/or copper (or a warm neutral color you favor). Decor accessories like a peacock feathers swtich plate cover (above), a peacock feathers outlet cover, peacock feather drawer knobs, peacock wall art etc. are good items to incorporate. Throw pillows featuring some of the different shades of a peacock feather along with a few feathers in a vase would bring the look of your boys bedroom together.
Any tips for redecorating a bedroom with a ballet or dance theme?
Okay so I just turned 15 and I hate my babyish pink bedroom with a princess theme. I really wanna change it. I was thinking of a ballet or dance theme but with no cute little kids stuff like teddy bears in tutus. Do you have any ideas for a more mature dance or ballet themed room without having to repaint my pink walls?

We just bought a new house and need to create individual themed rooms for our 4 kids. Do you have any good kids room themes for boys 8 and 5 and girls 2 and 3?
We want it to be fun, but not over the top. Both of the girls are into butterflies, lady bugs, princesses, etc. Our 5 year old loves toy story, cars, transformers, etc… And our 8 year old has a pretty open mind towards a room theme. He’s pretty athletic and loves school.

What would you recommend as good colors for my daughters’ themed rooms?
My 8 year daughter wants a Hanna Montana room and loves bright orange. My six year old daughter wants a princess room.
- William
A:
How about pink and orange for your daughter’s Hanna Montana room? Maybe add in a little purple as I believe a lot of the Hanna Montana licensed accessories are pink and purple. Try to find a nice pink shade that matches. While your daughter likes orange, I’d play the color down a bit so it doesn’t overpower the room.
I’d suggest a pink and/or purple princess themed room for your other daughter.
Q:
I need ideas for a toddler’s nautical themed bedroom
My wife and I are redoing our son’s nursery as part of his third birthday present. He’s a pretty outgoing kid who loves sailing and collecting treasures like sea shells and sea glass. We have decided we want to create s nautical themed toddler room that will grow with him and one we don’t have to update for several years. Do you have any nautical decor or color ideas that could inspire us?
- Paul
A:
First, I’d start by visiting nautical themed boys room for a little inspiration. I love how The Land of Nod uses bright red, dark blue and white in their nautical quilt bedding. I especially love the throw pillows and the buoy lamp!
I’d also suggest hanging a fishing net in one corner of the room and incorporating lighthouse or sailing wall art or decorative items like a ship in a bottle that could be displayed on a wall shelf. An anchor, paddles, a captain’s wheel, a rough hewn oar, and framed nautical maps are other ideas. Port hole style mirrors would be a good way to give your son’s room an “at-sea” feeling.
And finally, let your son’s sea shell and sea glass collections and random treasures like star fish, sand dollars and small pieces of driftwood take center stage in his nautical boys bedroom. Your son’s nautical themed room should be casual and functional yet speak volumes of his adventurous side.
Hope the above suggestions have been useful inspiring a kids room design that you son will enjoy for years to come.
