If the walls are curved or textured think about making the stencil out of a heavy brown paper bag. The bag is more flexible than poster board and can conform better to uneven surfaces. Another stencil option is to purchase individual letter stencils and tape them together to spell the desired name.
The Wall
Prepare the walls for the application of the stencil paint. Gently wipe them down with a wet rag to remove dirt and dust. After they have completely dried, measure around the room from the ceiling down to the desired placement of the border. If the stenciled border is going to be at a chair rail height measuring from the baseboard up may be easier. Mark a very light line around the room. Depending on the type of wall paint, a white dressmaker’s pencil may be a good option as it will create a clean line and is easy to rub away. Overall, the main goal is to have a straight line that is the same distance from the ceiling all the way around the room.
Applying the Stencil
Tape the stencil onto the wall using blue painter’s tape. Be sure that the bottoms of the letters sit along the line that was drawn around the room. Using a stenciling brush, paint inside the stenciling area using quick, even-pressured dabs. Allow the paint to dry completely in that area before moving to the next spot. Having just the right amount of paint on the stenciling brush will keep the paint from dripping and create a perfect stencil every time.
